Crispy

🎬 Overview

Crispy is classic slasher horror movie with a unique twist – an unoriginal plot centered in a cabin in the woods where a new killer awaits who is more brutal than logical or sane. The film’s attempt at a blend tween adventure with slasher horror comes in the form of a bleak backwoods setting—a work of Joe Leone.

The flick certainly comes off as ambitious as this was clearly an attempt in lean-out horror film yet it certainly does showcase gore, suspense, and some interesting characters, albeit with a lackluster execution.

🧠 Plot Summary: Chaotic Calamity of Cannibalism and Fantasy

It follows Ricky, an impulsive teen archetype with a hint of a sharp tongue. Ricky convinces friends to embark on a road trip to the woods to find a mysterious treasure known only in whispers. He does not have his sister’s permission (well, he certainly should), because telepathic Melanie makes it clear in her premonition that this is a horrible idea. But of course boundless youth is bullheaded to heed to caution.

“Harmony, Damien, and Adam are to join him for a weekend of hiking, partying, and treasure hunting,” says the backseat driver in a scrolling text. Group therapy desperately needed. Screaming, mystery, and all the woods have to offer—until they take a wrong turn.

And by very wrong, I mean horrifyingly terrible.

The cast can tell rather quickly that they are not the only ones in the woods. At night, they are stalked by a killer who is a cannibal—a predator who strikes without making a sound and takes pleasure in his cruel deeds. Gradually, the film becomes more mature and the curse begins to transform into reality as the teens start to fall into his jaws, one after the other.

The monstrous figure know only as Crispy serves as the fuel of the legend and brings alive the secrets that sleep in the woods. Melanie tries to rescue her brother from the brink using her telepathic bond with him, which morphs the story into a chaotic struggle to stay alive.

🎭 Main Cast & Overview

Colson Branum, Ricky’s actor as the bold teen:

Ricky is no doubt the bravest character in the movie as he is willing to take risks that come with discomfort. The under-development of Ricky’s emotional side makes Branum’s portrayal of the character teenage confident, even more believable.

Jessica Frew as Harmony.

Frew’s performance as Harmony is hands down the most memorable one. While her arc is one of the broken ones, Frew gives her for more strength and instincts of a survivor, leaving the rest feeling battered. Cry for help and desperation are some of the other emotions to expect.

Luke Ryan as Damien, Kerwin Johnson Jr. as Adam, Shane Ryan as Benny, Cole Ryan as Brett, Jake Murphy as Tate, Gabriel Medeiros as Louie

Each character fills one of the typical slasher film friend groups perfectly: comic relief, the tough guy, the romantic, the coward, and the skeptic. These stereotypes contribute, albeit predictably, to the burgeoning conflict.

🔪 Villain Profile: Who (or What) is Crispy?

Crispy’s killer is not as mythological as he is monstrous. A human cannibal hunting for markless victims in the wild. His origins are vague, shown through rustic drawings and broken-down cabins. But with the absence of detail comes greater effectiveness; he is less of a person and is more of a presence, forgotten cruelty in nature.

His speech and reasoning is nonexistent. Hunting his victim is the only task left for him. Each kill is performed without retreat, each capture far too helpless, and every second mercilessly filmed for viewers to witness a slaughter in its most raw form.

🎞️ Visual Style & Direction

Despite a restricting budget, Joe Leone has maximized the potential within the film’s setting and landscape. The woods genuinely feel and look isolating, and the handheld camerawork adds unfiltered and panic inducing realism during the chase scenes.

There is a tendency to depend on natural light for illumination, especially during the nighttime and dusk sequences, which both enhances the film’s realism and at times renders important visuals out of focus. The gore effects were practical and visceral—clearly independent, yet sanguinely effective for viewers’ stomachs when the situation called for it.

🔍 Themes & Subtext

🚨 Teen Ignorance vs. Consequence

As with any work within a specific genre, there are some conventions that can be directly recognized in Crispy. For one, it is a film that shows the danger of a ditching caution to satisfy one’s curiosity. Ricky’s choice to defy his sister’s pleas sparks a perilous domino effect, showcasing the archetype of careless exploration resulting in violent consequences: indulging in foolish pastimes rewards with bloody outcomes.

🔥 Folklore and Rural Horror

Crispy takes rural horror to another level. The film exploits the “local legend” horror sub-genre where the protagonist faces threats arising from constant gossip and childhood stories. It expertly exploits the common fear of being away from civilization and in a world where societal morals cease to exist.

🧠 Psychic Bonds and Sibling Loyalty

Ranging from underexplored to undeveloped, the storyline does manage to surprise with its vague psychical elements. In a brutal story, Melanie’s attempts to reach and save her brother Ricky serve as the only hope within the narration’s emotional core, something that’s fragile yet powerful.

📝 Critical Response & Viewer Reaction

Unlike other horror films, Crispy has not been well received by the majority leaving it to receive mostly negative reviews. While it remains popular among fans of independent horror films and gory slasher films, the reactions have certainly diminished in regard to more mainstream audiences.

Strengths

Jessia Frew’s acting as Harmony

Forest photography and the atmospheric backdrop

Brutal kills with practical effects.

Well done pacing given the short runtime.

Weaknesses:

Barely developed characters, excluding the last girl archetype.

Cliched horror elements with little to no creativity.

Poor dialogue and unnatural acting in the early scenes.

The telepathy subplot feels tacked on.

Final thoughts

All in all, would I recommend watching Crispy?

If you enjoy barebones slashers, Crispy should satisfy. It’s rough around the edges and at times absurd, but there is something to be said about the film’s attempt to disturb and entertain.

Watch it if:

âś” You relish instinctive, grindhouse horror films that lack funding.

âś” You love slashers where the killers are from the countryside.

âś” You want to view emerging filmmakers experiment with indie horror.

âś” You need a brutal horror film that gets to the point without frills.

Skip it if:

❌ You are looking for highly skilled acting and high quality writing.

❌ If you do not enjoy excessive gore and minimal character development.

❌ If you enjoy having psychological substance rather than visceral violence.

🎯 Bottom Line

Crispy (2024) is a rough, blood-drenched horror flick that portrays the countryside in a diabolical light. It does not transform the genre but utilizes it to build fear. This is reminiscent of the films shown at midnight; dirty, bloody, and gleefully savage, perfect for those with the right mindset.

Would you like me to find other indie horror movies for you, focused on sheer survival without the gloss?
