Themes and Symbolism

Deep Rising is a so-called tame creatures student project that takes the human monstrosities and their halfway stated effects with no afterthought into account. They exist for various reasons, an egotistic self-pity not being the least amusing.

Battle of Human Gain vs Nature – Without any consideration, the hijackers alongside the owner of the ship died while trying to gain as much as they could. It did serve as a perfect example of how severe the consequences of human arrogance can be.

Survival Against the Undiscovered – This brutality of human endeavor and the fear of the undiscovered world hiding beneath the deep abyss is what struck fear into the hearts of many.

Corporate Corruption and Karma – The latter of which this ship servant had without doubt turned into steer as a result of the amenities that were granted to them.

Character Dynamics and Performances

John Finnegan (Treat Williams) – He is the most typical cynical jarhead an action-adventure film would have. Unlike the classic ones, Finnegan does not have a heroic sentiment behind him. He does exhibit a dry sense of humor, along with being resourceful to make him an engaging protagonist.

Trillian St. James (Famke Janssen) – She is a sharp witted thief who is resilient and charming in the midst of chaos.

Hanover (Wes Studi) – He is a dual role for the one of the antagonists. A leader of the hijackers, Hanover is ruthless yet tactical serving as both an antagonist and a reluctant ally against the true enemy.

Canton (Anthony Heald) – The greedy, manipulative businessman whose self-serving actions set the disaster in motion.

The movie gains from the superb interaction between the characters with Treat Williams portraying the role of Famke Janet’s husband with a Fordian swagger and Jones doing a capable and sharp opposite role.

Visual and Technical Craftsmanship

Special Effects – During the late 90s, CGI was still in its developmental stages, however the creature effects for this film, especially the giant. tentacled sea monster, is ambitious and effective for the genre. The explosion and piranha sequence, combined with practical gore effects only heightens the gruesome tension.

Set Design – The horror Argonautica sets within is uncanny to the decaying luxury of the set providing a striking contrast.

Action and Pacing – This film does not linger, choosing instead to keep a furious speed and incorporating carefully choreographed action scenes, frantic escapes, and excessive violence.
